Description

Tetrahydrofuran (abbreviated as THF, CAS No.: 109-99-9) is an oxygen-containing five-membered heterocyclic compound produced by the hydrogenation of furan. Its cyclic ether structure makes it an excellent solvent for a wide range of polar and non-polar substances (such as PVC, polystyrene, natural resins, and many polymers), exhibiting particularly strong solvency for PVC resins. Consequently, THF is an irreplaceable solvent in the manufacture of specialty adhesives for PVC pipes, sheets, etc. (commonly known as "THF cement"). In the polyurethane (PU) industry chain, it serves as the monomer for producing polytetrahydrofuran (PTMEG), which is a key raw material for manufacturing high-performance spandex fibers and thermoplastic polyurethane elastomers (TPU). In chemical synthesis, THF is a common medium for water-sensitive reactions such as Grignard reactions and is also used as a solvent for producing lithium salts and pharmaceuticals. In analytical applications, high-purity THF is an important mobile phase in high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) and gel permeation chromatography (GPC). Furthermore, it is used in lithium battery electrolyte formulations and the manufacture of specialty coatings.
